Spread the Word: Public Art Opportunity in Leeton!

Leeton Council and Western Riverina Arts are seeking Expressions of Interest from artists, designers or engineers (individuals or project teams) to design and create 5 public artworks. The pieces will be used as Heritage Interpretative Stations in the villages of Yanco and Whitton and the town of Leeton. Artists will be paid up to $15,000 for each commissioned artwork and artists can apply to design and create either one or multiple works.

"This project is a great opportunity for artists to see their work publicly displayed in Leeton, where it will effectively become a new part of the built environment", said Western Riverina Arts Executive Officer Derek Motion. "The Western Riverina Arts strategic plan identifies supporting new public art ventures as a priority and we’re very pleased to see a new project going ahead in our region. We are hopeful this can be the first step in a more extensive long term public art program for the region."

The 'Lyrics, Landscapes and Lintels' project has been funded by The Heritage Near Me Heritage Activation Grants and each artwork will be paired with a sign telling a brief heritage story. The Expression of Interest documentation lists a number of heritage stories and ideas that artists may choose to explore in their works.

"A public workshop was recently conducted seeking ideas for storylines", says Kelly Tyson, Manager for Planning and Environment at Leeton Shire Council. "Council is looking forward to promoting awareness about our Shire’s heritage to our community and to visitors and for increased opportunity to engage with contemporary art. The finished artworks should become a real drawcard for visitors to Leeton Shire."

Expressions of Interest for the project are OPEN NOW and will close 31 July. Full details and the expression of interest can be downloaded HERE.
