Western Riverina Arts presents 'Diary of a Wombat'

Award winning Monkey Baa Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Diary of a Wombat, a new Australian play based on the multi-award winning picture book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley.

Following its phenomenal Sydney premiere, Diary of a Wombat is about to tour 59 venues across Australia until November - one of them the ROXY Theatre in Leeton. Presented by Western Riverina Arts, Monkey Baa Theatre Company will bring the enduring childhood classic to life for school children from Leeton and surroundings on Tuesday May 9.

Western Riverina Arts' Executive Officer Derek Motion says "The Western Riverina Arts 2016-18 Strategic Plan identifies bringing touring theatre shows to the region as a priority, and it is especially important for our towns outside of Griffith. By supporting the tour of Diary of a Wombat we will allow hundreds of Leeton school children to see a FREE high-quality theatre production, something they might not often otherwise experience. A tutor will also tour to selected schools prior to the show, providing much-needed skills development for children of all ages."

The young audiences will meet Mothball, the naughtiest wombat in Australia. Bored with her daily routine, Mothball goes in search of shelter and food, creating chaos in the lives of the humans around her. Doormats, bins and washing lines are no match for this mischievous marsupial. Between a packed schedule of scratching, sleeping and eating, Mothball discovers that with a bit of persistence humans are quite easily trained!

Director Eva Di Cesare and a team of revered creatives use the magic of puppetry and live music to bring this delightful story to the stage.

“We've assembled an extraordinary team of artists to bring this iconic picture book to life,” said Eva Di Cesare. “Diary of a Wombat is such an enduring childhood classic and audiences are going to fall in love with Mothball all over again when she burrows her way on to our stage.”

There will be a limited number of tickets available for sale on the day. Cost will be $2 per person on the door (no reservations).
