FEBRUARY WRAP-UP

Dorothy Roddy's exhibition 'Moments In Time' opened at Leeton Museum and Gallery. The exhibition highlights the history of the ‘Riverina Welfare Farm for Boys Yanco' and the 'POW Camp 15 Yanco' years based at what is now Yanco Agricultural Institute. The 'Moments In Time' schedule has been extended, visitors can view it throughout the month of March. The Yanco Museum Project is supported by Create NSW and Western Riverina Arts.

Huge congratulations to local artist Layla Bacayo who beat hundreds of nominees to win the Community Colleges Australia Achievement Award for 2021. Layla has made significant contributions to the Riverina in the arts and advocacy sectors. Find out more.

Brilliant results from Leeton Art Society Inc 's sold out Youth Art Workshops which were held earlier in the month. Students experiment with mixed media and plein air sketching under tutor Jennie Forster, to create these collaged artworks. This project was possible with support of Leeton Art Society, Leeton Shire, Regional NSW - Office for Regional Youth and Western Riverina Arts.

Mahni Ireland was the second programmed artist of Narrandera Arts and Creative Network's Wide Open 2022 program. Mahni's exhibition explored many mediums with a focus on digital art. Congratulations Mahni and best of luck with the commencement of your studies of the Animation and Interactive Media course at RMIT.

Urana artist Robert Sherwood Duffield encourages us to look down and take inspiration in the small details: "If you're out for a picnic or having a bushwalk stop and have a look at the trunks of trees and stuff like that. There's just so many colours and textures, there are whole little worlds going on in those minute spaces." Listen to the interview with ABC News.

The closing event for Political Women held at Griffith Regional Art Gallery included artist talks which provided deeper insight into the artworks and created discussion amongst attendees. Curated by Julie Montgarrett and Sarah McEwan, the exhibition includes contributions from 27 artists. Political Women has toured to its second location and is now on display at MAC - Museum of Art and Culture Lake Macquarie.

Griffith Community Centre opened its first art exhibition. Works were developed by the local community as part of workshops ran by Kerri Weymouth and Land Council chairwoman Vickie Simpson. The workshops were one of several activities at the recent Survival Day event organised by Griffith Local Aboriginal Land Council with support from Griffith City Council. Local artists or community groups can enquire with the centre’s manager Peta Dummett regarding potential future exhibitions.

Local Artist Linzie Joanne has partnered with Green House Interiors to bring an exclusive collection of beautiful expressionist landscapes. You can purchase these original pieces here.

Lee Blacker-Noble's final solo exhibition titled 'Former Glories' was held at Leeton Museum and Gallery. A long time contributor to public art in the region and one of the original members of the Leeton Art Society, Lee was warmly celebrated by a large crowd at her opening. There are still some remaining pieces from the exhibition available for purchase - get in touch with WRA to enquire.

Regional Futures EOI

Regional Futures is a two-year program of commissioning and conversations that places artists at the centre of a dialogue exploring a future vision for the place where they live and create.

Managed by the NSW Regional Arts Network and funded by Create NSW, this is an opportunity for artists to participate in a statewide project, capturing a sense of celebration of regional creative practice and diversity of perspectives.

Applications will soon be sought from creatives across all art forms based in the Western Riverina Arts region to undertake a creative development of a new work that responds to the prompt ‘What does the future look like for our regions?’

The Expression of Interest for Stage One opens on Monday March 7. To find out more, visit the Regional Futures website www.regionalfutures.net.au

Flood Recovery Support Northern Rivers

Our thoughts are with our colleagues at Arts Northern Rivers and the creative communities severely affected by the floods. There is an open call for flood recovery support: Donations can be made here.

"The creative sector across the entire region has collectively suffered untold losses: galleries losing entire collections, studios, equipment, and artworks in ruin, and livelihoods in freefall. Along with this, Arts Northern Rivers also have completely lost their office to the floods. Unfortunately, like many across the region, the not-for-profit organisation is not insured for floods. With insurance premiums beginning at $30,000 per annum, this is simply an unattainable cost for most across the arts sector.

With a core value of advocacy, Arts Northern Rivers has already reached out to the region's colleagues and peers to begin the task of tracking the scale of the damages. These damages are rising into the 10’s of millions in building and infrastructure alone including; Lismore Regional Gallery, The Northern Rivers Conservatorium, Lismore City Hall (NORPA), M-Arts (Murwillumbah), Byron School of Art, Spaghetti Circus, and so many more. What is extremely prevalent is the magnitude of loss for the region’s independents, which, with the highest concentration of creatives outside a metro area numbering into the hundreds, are suffering greatly, and it will take months if not years to come through this."

Furiosa: Jobs Across Hay and Griffith

Warner Brothers are filming the Mad Max prequel 'Furiosa' in Hay over the next few months and are seeking to hire people local to the area. They are looking for a Production Assistant/Runner. For more information, please contact Roxanne on 0435 277 860 or roxanne.sino@warnerprod.com.

AUDIO VISIONS Call For Artists

After the very successful 2021 Community Exhibition - Rethinking the Winter Solstice - GRAG wanted a strong theme the 2022 community exhibition, but one that would not be as prescriptive as the previous years which have been rooted in elemental forces such a seasons, landscape and environment. For their 2022 Community Exhibition AUDIO VISIONS they ask local artists to create art from their favourite piece of music. To all creatives in our community we encourage you to apply and we cannot wait to see what you produce! “Let your ears be the source of creativity for artworks inspired by your favourite pieces of music. Because, art and music are the epitome of creativity.” - Ray Wholohan

Entry is open to all artists aged 15+ currently living or working in the Griffith, Leeton, Murrumbidgee, Hay, Carathool or Narranderra LGAs. Entry fee is $5 per entry (up to two artworks may be entered per artist) and entries close 5pm Friday 1st April 2022.

GRAPA Theatre Talent at Adelaide Fringe Festival

GRAPA Theatre's Bernie Maxwell, Peter Fordham and Romina Tappi have received a great review for their play 'Hopes and Dreams' which was performed as part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

"Bitterness and despair would better title this gruelling and gritty dissection of a clapped-out marriage. Marion and Douglas are a working-class version of Martha and George from Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, slightly less articulate but no less damning in their savage disappointments and derogatory take downs of each other. If your experience of family life or a marriage is anything similar you’ll be in an uncomfortable space and if it isn’t you’ll be mightily relieved. The show excels through the consummate writing of Bernie Maxwell, and his powerful performance as the hapless, put upon husband Douglas, alongside the terrifyingly good Romina Tappi as his frustrated wife; permanently paralytic through ennui and alcohol. Direction by Peter Fordham is unfussy and effective, including a technique where each character joins the audience to watch a soliloquy of their spouse. If you love your theatre tight, terrific and challenging, live out your hopes and dreams at the Bakehouse."
- Craig Cook, The Advertiser, AdelaideNow
