With a deep and heavy sadness, Western Riverina Arts announces the passing of Wiradjuri Artist of National Significance, Ver nica Collins.
We send our deep sympathies, love, support and condolences to her family, friends, loved ones, and her homeland communities of Griffith, Albury and Cowra.
Ver nica Collins, Wiradjuri, passed away on the 24th of January in Griffith. She was a powerful presence and a thunderous force of life who imparted great love to those around her every day. Ver nica leaves a vital and lifelong national legacy across all aspects of her life; she was history in the making as an artist expressing her Wiradjuri heart and deep pride in her community and culture. She was a pre-67 Elder, a wife, a mother, grandmother, aunty, and lifelong political activist demanding justice and redress. She walked the streets of her much-loved community as well as those corridors of her representative politicians, always asserting her sovereign rights unceded. She supported everyone around her with a daily love, wisdom, philosophy, deep felt experience and a genuine sacrifice to have others supported and nurtured, especially being present among young artists for them to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
Most of all she was uncompromising in her creativity and her Wiradjuri Culture. A true master artist whose works are so deep, so touching, so pure and so skilful that to behold a painting is to feel the underskin and mystery of this vast and beautiful country.
“The work Ver nica considers to have the greatest significance is publicly viewable. Her goanna design resides on the Welcome To Griffith signs at each of the five main entrances to the city, thus leaving her permanent mark on Griffith. She loves that her goanna watches over and welcomes all new visitors into her hometown.” – Western Riverina Arts May Artist of the Month 2020

You will be forever missed beautiful woman.

Western Riverina Arts share our heartfelt sympathies with the Leeton art community and the family of Lynne McQuillan, after her passing on the 25th of January. A talented artist and three-time Penny Paniz Prize winner, Lynne was dedicated to the arts, sharing her knowledge and volunteering her time at Leeton Museum and Gallery. She will be deeply missed.
From Leeton Art Society: It is with great sadness that I must inform you that our beautiful friend and fellow artist Lynne McQuillan passed away this morning at 5 am.
Lynne was a founding member of the Leeton Art Society Inc. and a passionate supporter of art in Leeton. Lynne shared her artistic talent freely with all of us.
She was quiet, gentle and a kind lady who never wanted to draw attention to herself. Lynne was a winner of our Penny Paniz Acquisitive art exhibition many time over the years and won lots of other prizes for her artworks.
She was well known for her beautiful Pastel artworks and we always looked forward to Lynne’s demonstrations for us at Tuesday Casual Art mornings.
RIP our beautiful talented artist and compassionate good friend, we will miss you Lynne!
Our sincere condolences to Rob and the family at this very sad time.

Yanco Museum Project | Dorothy Roddy: Moments In Time
5 February - 4 March | Leeton Museum and Gallery
Dorothy Roddy, Artist and Curator, along with Leonie Napier, Project Leader of the Yanco Museum Project, premiere an Exhibition at Leeton Museum and Art Gallery to document and highlight the history of the ‘Riverina Welfare Farm for Boys Yanco' and the 'POW Camp 15 Yanco' years based at what is now Yanco Agricultural Institute.
The result is 12 fully researched oil paintings which are re-imagined from the original historical black and white and sepia photos, to bring to life in full colour the lives of the people who once lived there. Six will cover the Riverina Welfare Farm and six will cover POW Camp 15. These eras spanned the time between 1928 and 1947. Each image has its own interesting story to tell. The product is a stunning and informative display of some little-known yet important parts of our local history. A must for locals and history buffs alike to visit.
‘Moments is Time’ opens Saturday February 5 and runs through to Friday March 4 at Leeton Museum and Art Gallery. The exhibition will then move to permanent display at Yanco Agricultural Institute adding to their growing Museum display.
