AUGUST WRAP-UP

Western Riverina Arts attended the fourth annual Daily Telegraph Bush Summit held in Griffith NSW on Friday the 26th of August. Promoted as an event that is “agenda-setting and policy-shifting with the ability to change things for the better in the bush”, it pulled together politicians, leaders and business owners to discuss challenges faced by regional communities. Read our wrap up here.

Western Riverina Arts held our Get Your Grant On! Grant Writing Workshop & Networking Event at Leeton Museum and Gallery. The sold out event ran by Sues Vos covered all aspects of a successful grant application, budgets and finding funds and created a lot of interesting conversations. Keep any eye out for our next professional development workshop.

It's not everyday your project gets this kind of exposure with the Prime Minister! The Hon. Anthony Albanese MP can be seen here with the Rescue of Riverina Native Birds Exhibition at Griffith Regional Theatre during his attendance of the Bush Summit. This was its last stop in the Western Riverina - watch Ray Wholohan's observations and musings of the exhibition at the closing event.

The artists of the Sunflower Collective exhibited at the Narrandera Arts and Community Centre as a part of NACNet's Wide Open 2022 Program. The Collective includes Broken Hill artist Kelly Leonard, Blue Mountains and Monaro artist Michael Petchovsky, Narrandera's Julie Briggs and Wagga Wagga artist Julie Montgarrett.

Leeton Art Society hosted John Wilson, a renowned painter with 49 years’ experience as an artist, tutor and judge. John is one of Australia’s multi-award-winning oil painters who has exhibited in London, USA, Japan, Canada, Beijing and Seoul. John mesmerised the room full of art enthusiasts as he transformed his canvas into a vibrant rural scene throughout the evening.

Through her work in various roles on the Board (of note as Chair, Vice Chair and Community Member for Narrandera) Julie has helped to shape, guide, be a part of, and support arts and culture in the Western Riverina." We thank Julie for all her work over the years!

Wins at the Coolamon Up2Date Art Exhibition

Western Riverina Arts attended the Coolamon Up2Date Art Gala event which was a fabulous evening of art, performance and food. A huge congratulations to Dorothy Roddy for winning the major Open Prize and to Ayla Young who achieved Highly Commended, as judged by Dr Sam Bowker and Tim Kurylowicz. Ayla's work later went on to win the People's Choice Award as voted by visitors.

Judges’ comments on Dorothy’s First Place work ‘Jerry and Rebbs’: “I felt simultaneously drawn in and incriminated, looking at this piece. This is one of those works where the subject and the observer are staring directly at each other. What are their thoughts about you? I think there’s something they want you to know. What do you think it is? We all need to know their story.”

Judges’ comments on Ayla’s Highly Commended and People's Choice winning work ‘Country Skies’: “How do you capture our enormous, big sky with only a pencil? Ayla Young’s exquisite piece has the starkness and contrast of a photograph, and yet those clouds carry something painterly, almost romantic. Soft grass and steel, plant and animal dwarfed by the colossal rural atmosphere. It’s as breathtaking as our home really is.”
