The Joyce Spencer Textiles Fellowship

The Joyce Spencer Textiles Fellowship

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 27 May 2020

The Cad Factory, Western Riverina Arts and the Spencer family are delighted to announce that on 1 June 2020 applications will open for the inaugural Joyce Spencer Textiles Fellowship worth $4000.

The Joyce Spencer Fellowship is a new initiative that supports textile artists based in regional NSW to develop and present original work. Applications are due at midnight on 19 July 2020 for projects to be delivered by December 2022.

Joyce Spencer (1928–2019) was an active artist and craft practitioner throughout her lifetime, creating a large body of artwork, teaching hundreds of workshops, and writing five bestselling books.

Sarah McEwan from the Cad Factory explains, “Joyce was an artist full of enthusiasm with a deep love of making. She was an unstoppable force, still creating new work well into her late eighties. This fellowship is to honour Joyce’s imaginative and creative spirit.”

Aanya Whitehead, Executive Director of Western Riverina Arts reflects that, “In these times of incredible difficulty that no one could have predicted, we hope that the Joyce Spencer Fellowship contributes to spinning and weaving a creative dream, just as Joyce herself did with the many mediums that she worked with, while always encouraging others through heart and art.”

The fellowship is an opportunity for regional artists based in NSW and is in honour of Joyce’s lifelong connection to regional living and regional making in both the Southern Highlands and Narrandera.

“Joyce Spencer was an enduring energy that brought people together to learn and share skills. Through this fellowship we continue Joyce’s celebration of people, place and practice” says Vic McEwan from the Cad Factory.

Artists can submit their applications via the Cad Factory’s website, www.cadfactory.com.au.

The Joyce Spencer Fellowship will continue in 2021 for a final year. It has been made possible by the support of Joyce Spencer’s family, Western Riverina Arts and the Cad Factory.
