Always Will Be is an exhibition of documentary photographs by Barbara McGrady that speaks to all Australians from an entirely indigenous perspective. These works are historical documents of political, social and community events that hold great value within indigenous history. The exhibition breaks new ground in its capacity to represent the unique subjective voice of the photographer, in this case an indigenous voice telling indigenous histories.

The interpretation of photographs is shaped through our own social and personal standpoint within a history. Through greater knowledge comes understanding. In the hands of an informed and skillful artist such as McGrady photography has the potential to be an effective tool for change. Barbara McGrady is an activist photographer.

McGrady’s images of Indigenous people, primarily within the urban environment of Sydney, form a powerful narrative about what it means to be First Nations in Australia today.

Barbara McGrady is a Kamileroi woman who was born in Mungindi, North Western NSW, on the Queensland border. She moved to Sydney in the early 1970’s and lives in Glebe.

As a female indigenous documentary photographer in Australia, McGrady is unique. There are many well known art photographers in the exhibition world but as a photojournalist she stands apart.
