OCTOBER WRAP-UP

Western Riverina Arts recently supported a young artist from the Murrumbidgee region to further develop his skills at Andrew Whitehead's three day sculpture course. Travis Lawton utilised his welding and artistic skills to build a new work: "I was able to pick up many useful tips and tricks that he (Andrew) uses when building sculptures. During the weekend I was able to create my own longhorn bull sculpture".

Griffith Community Centre in collaboration with Kerri Weymouth ran a community art project in October that encouraged people to add their mark to a work that celebrates the local Griffith community. The completed work will go on display at Griffith Community Centre. Image: Kerri Weymouth

William Ingram and Elijah Ingram's exhibition 'Contemporary Tradition' at Leeton Museum and Gallery was a hit with art collectors, selling many works. Elijah says "The exhibition was an exciting opportunity to collaborate with my father and showcase our two different styles of artworks. Thank you to everyone who visited the exhibition!"

ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Beacho2700

At just 16 Xavier Beauchamp is a young talented up-and-coming professional rap artist from the Western Riverina who goes by Beacho2700 and whose original tracks are available through Spotify, Apple Music, Instagram, YouTube and SoundCloud.

Beacho2700 is a combination of Xavier Beauchamp’s nickname and the postcode for Narrandera NSW where he comes from.  Xavier works hard to carve out his own future in the music industry and said he was drawn to music and songwriting from an early age: “I was getting caught up in the system and things were happening to me all the time that I couldn't control”.  He said as a child he decided for himself that he would change his future: “It came to one point where I decided, and I was good at music, so I took that opportunity.”  He says one day he was in a recording studio at Tirkandi Inaburra Cultural and Development Centre in the regional town of Coleambally NSW: “I was with my mate…and I just started mucking around in the studio and that's when everyone started getting into it”.  It was only a couple of months later that he officially released ‘Make It Out’ with fellow rapper Jacky Serg, “big shout out to Jack - he and everyone just got around the beat”.

The rap genre is an artform that Xavier relates to: “I just wanted to write my own songs and then I wanted to record them all in different studios”.  He says what draws him to it is the lifestyle, the stories, and how they live; he feels a cultural connection: “In the Australian scene I really look up to Onefour, Briggs and the 046… and in the American scene I look up to Biggie, Dr Jay, Jay-Z, Ice Cube,” among others.  On how he creatively discovered his music, Xavier says, “I don't know if I really learned it, I was just telling my story and I was good at music. I was doing it for my family.”

Xavier says that arts organisations in rural areas play a big role if someone wants to grow their career in the arts: “We don’t get much with what they get in the big cities out here, out here is different, and it’s the place that needs the most help…in the regional areas of the state.” He said he has received a lot of support from cultural organisations who work in regional areas, like Western Riverina Arts and the team from Heaps Decent who are based in Sydney but do outreach programs across NSW: “Heaps Decent, they have done a lot for me over the years, especially Adam Bozzetto, I have done a lot of recording with him"

Recognise Artists As Workers

A message from National Association of Visual Arts: "Later this year, the Federal Government is launching a new National Cultural Policy. A founding principle of the new policy framework is recognising artists as workers. Currently, many visual artists and arts workers are underpaid, with little opportunity to negotiate their fees and wages.

When visual artists and arts workers ask to be paid for their work, and paid decently, it is because the people behind the artworks and experiences that audiences across Australia love, deserve to be compensated for their time and labour. It is time to recognise artists as workers.

That’s why NAVA is amping up the pressure to ensure a legislated Award for the visual arts, craft and design sector is included in the new policy. We need your help to ensure Arts Minister Tony Burke honours his commitment to support artists as workers and celebrate their role as the creators of culture."

Sign the open letter for a legislated Visual Arts Award to be included in the new National Cultural Policy.

Lisa Taliano Represents Griffith in the T20 World Cup Regional Roadshow

Local artist and Greengecko Art Studio owner Lisa Taliano was commissioned to do a live painting at the Griffith Multicultural Festival by the T20 World Cup Regional Roadshow.

Lisa says "It was a regional roadshow to gather awareness for the upcoming World Cup Cricket. Each town they visited had an artist commissioned to represent their town. It didn't have to be sport related. It was a live painting, which had to be completed on the day. All the paintings will then be exhibited as a group to show where the roadshow travelled when the main games commence.

My landscape is a view from Scenic hill looking out over the fields & towards Binya Hills. I chose to paint it vibrantly to represent the liveliness & industrious nature of our area. I also included the world cup logo on the foreground rock to pay homage to Wiradjuri land. Hard gig, lots of people from the multicultural festival wanting to chat whilst trying to present a sound work!"
