OCTOBER WRAP-UP

Keep an eye on this ongoing Sandhills project developing between Kerri Weymouth, The Cad Factory and various artists such as Owen Lyons of Wiradjuri Art. Once all paintings are complete they will hang in the library at Narrandera for all people to enjoy. Image: Sandhills Memories, Owen Lyons.

The WCIC has received an updated look with new banners. Graphic Design by Fran from Gryphonox Design featuring original artwork from William Ingram. Stop by the museum & gallery (or our office) and have a look!
It was fantastic to once again see the Narrandera Arts Centre brimming with art during the exhibition 'Works' by regional artist Robert Sherwood Duffield. You can view more of his work via his Instagram page.

The Hon. Don Harwin MLC, Minister for the Arts, dropped by the WCIC building earlier in the month to discuss all things arts and culture in our region with staff and board members of Western Riverina Arts. The minister also got a quick tour of
Yanco Public School's ’To Walk In Someone Else's Shoes’ that was exhibited in the Leeton Museum and Gallery.

Lights! Camera! Action! The folks at The Living Room took a trip to Narrandera to revitalise the space at Narrandera Bidgee Boxing, utilising artwork from Allan Mckenzie Aboriginal Art.

Members of the Historic Hydro Writers Collective performed at their first Open Mic Night at The Hydro. They shared examples of their writing with a warm crowd and enjoyed some rousing acoustic guitar sets by group member Chris Dawe.

Huge congratulations to Leeton Museum and Gallery, Griffith Pioneer Park Museum and Griffith Regional Art Gallery for their nominations in the Museums & Galleries of NSW 2020 IMAGinE Awards! The livestream of the awards will be taking place November 25 at 3pm.

ARTSTATE WRAP-UP

Artstate was a four-year project by Regional Arts NSW that shone a light on excellence in arts practice in the regions and explored exciting possibilities for arts and cultural development across the state. It's fourth and final year was held in Wagga Wagga in partnership with Eastern Riverina Arts. Western Riverina Arts staff and members of the board attended the event. There were several artists from our region who were also involved with the festival in the Speakers Program and the Arts Program. You can revisit the livestream via artstate.com.au. Here's what Western Riverina Artists got up to:

Creative Journeys Panel Talk
Three Aboriginal artists shared their stories of building their careers in the arts. Narrandera based artist and designer Lillardia Briggs-Houston of Ngarru Miimi spoke of her dream of a future where the next generation of her local community could thrive in their chosen creative field while living on Country. Lillardia shared the stage with comedian Dane Simpson and dancer Joel Bray.
One for Sorrow, Two for Joy
Vic McEwan, Artistic Director of the Cad Factory, led a performative exploration of the complexities involved in working with community around issues of suicide and grief. This presentation was comprised of three 'scenes' including a video contribution by Clive Parkinson from the U.K. and the retelling of Aunty Lorraine Tye’s experiences of loss from a young age.
Ash Dust Air Book Launch
Congratulations to Leeton students Jessica Wells, Jana Deaton and Madeline Irvin on their first publication! The young writers attended the Artstate book launch of 'Ash Dust Air' an anthology of works from regional youth responding to these unprecedented times, curated by Gabrielle Tozer. Not pictured, Cathleen Metre who was also published. Pick up a copy from easternriverinaarts.org.au
Artstate Opening Ceremony
Uncle Stan Grant Senior set the record straight on the meaning of ‘Wagga Wagga’ during the Artstate opening ceremonies. Though Wagga does have quite a few crows, the Wiradjuri term Wagga Wagga means dancing, celebrating - the truth of which Uncle Stan has been advocating for decades.
Horizons Made Wide Exhibition
Horizons Made Wide was a treasure hunt art trail exhibition held during Artstate. Leeton Art Society Inc President Jacqui Herrmann and local artists Kate Smith and Hape Kiddle's artworks were displayed along Fitzmaurice Street, in Wagga. We enjoyed finding that Kate's punch needle textile work was in front of an embroidery store!
Multi-disciplinary Co-Creation: Combining Creative Arts & Science Panel
Animator and Artist Bernard Higgins was on the fascinating panel on Arts and Science. A Wiradjuri man from Leeton, Higgins is at Charles Sturt University exploring skill, trade and Culture through animation and science. He showed some exciting and innovative digital examples from his studies and emerging career, some of which were interpretations of his own community's Wiradjuri stories of the Leeton area.

Also on the panel from CSU were Professor Eleanor Gates-Stuart and Lecturer Andrew Hagan. It was moderated by Tracey Callinan, Executive Director of Arts Outwest.
Something To Say Exhibition
Involving 13 artists, Something To Say was co-curated by Julie Montgarrett and Sarah McEwan and shown at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. 'In a time of climatic unravelling, a global pandemic and widening inequalities, there is a need for ‘unmaking’ the present world from the errors of our past. The artists and artworks in ‘Something to Say’ are considering positive and meaningful ways to reimagine life on the only planet we have; where all life is considered and valued.'

Images: Ode to Wages Against Housework (1975), 2019-20, Video, audio, Her Riot. Hands in Pockets and Paris Hilton's handbag, 2020, Assorted vintage fabrics, vintage frames, mixed media, Kerri Weymouth and Julie Montgarrett.
The (un)Usual: when the Familiar becomes Strange
Local artist Jason Richardson was one of the many creatives working on this project, which also included artists from Real Art Works, Navigate Arts and the Art Factory.

“Pushing the boundaries of text, light and sound, this guided tour of a number of interactive installations and live art on the foreshore of the Wollundry Lagoon. Be prepared to flip your switches when The Familiar becomes Strange and where audiences are not just spectators!”

This was definitely an immersive experience like no other, which completely transformed the Civic Theatre Precinct into an unfamiliar world.
8 Doors Exhibition
Former Leetonian, Animation Artist Alice Peacock was one of the artists collaborating on the project 8 Doors. You can see the studio doors on the Civic Centre Exterior Wall facing Morrow Street. Click here to see Alice’s interactive 360° Studio Tour Drawing, as well as the other works in the project. ‘8 Doors is a collaborative exhibition outcome from the project: On the space of artists, a partnership between Parramatta Artists’ Studios (PAS), Eastern Riverina Arts and Charles Sturt University (CSU).'
Sigh
It was fabulous to immerse ourselves in Sigh during Artstate, a moment of magical tranquility in an unlikely setting - as one attendee put it "It was like a thousand little meditations."

"Presented amongst flames and molten steel, Sigh is a collaboration between Blacksmith, John Wood and musician Vic McEwan. Forged steel, flames, fire, clarinet, pump organs, contact microphones and more. An intimate performance in a working blacksmith’s studio where you will hear the screams & sighs of this enduring paradoxical medium."
