Any artist who takes their work seriously will have to sign a contract at some point in their career and even if it is a small amount of money, it's worth understanding the implications of commissioned work.
That's why Western Riverina Arts hosted a session on legal issues relevant to artists in 2014. Robyn Ayres, executive director of Arts Law, presented topics such as copyright, contracts, business issues and tax basics.
The discussion of contracts established what constitutes a binding agreement and what to do if your contract is breached. Furthermore Arts Law’s standard contracts were covered.
Intellectual property and copyright were outlined, as well as the moral rights of artists. Business structures for artists and organisations were another topic and further information included tax basics and liability issues, such as how to limit liability through the use of waivers, disclaimers and insurance.
If you want to know more about the law in the arts and what you can and can't do feel free to contact us. We are happy to help.
